The United States consumer privacy company TrackOFF said this week it was looking for partners and resellers in South Africa.

Alexander Seher, vice president of business development, told the Margin that statistics show South Africans were very vulnerable to internet security breaches and cyber attacks. He said one his company’s main goals was to educate people about the importance of protecting their privacy online.

TrackOFF can also stop adverts ‘following’ a user across multiple websites.

Seher said some people didn’t care about these pervasive ads, and liked the fact that companies knew their preferences and would show them targeted ads.

“But I think if people knew what happened to their data on the backend and the fact that it’s bought and sold for profit to data collection companies and marketers, they’d think twice about what they put online.

“An ad marketing company, or a third party will identify somebody and they can see their logins, their usernames, which banks they use and which websites they visit and what email accounts they have. When they pile all this information together, they can get a pretty comprehensive profile of a person. “

Seher said it was also a concern that this valuable data was stored on third party servers, which could easily be hacked.

The two-year-old company, based in Baltimore, said its reseller programme is tailored to a partner’s needs, and they would also have access to a dedicated account manager.

TrackOFF has a reseller portal where third parties could purchase keys in bulk. He said it could also tailor pricing to a partner, depending on volume and offer a significant discount.
